You have an excellent conversation-starter reply whenever someone asks what you do. The answer, "I am a writer" will trigger a variety of responses.

Even the lamest response, "What do you write?," will give you license to say anything to sustain the conversation or to abbreviate it.

When I receive the standard cocktail icebreaker, I generally say that "I'm a retired weight lifter" or that "I'm a awful gardener" or whatever pops in my head that I think will trigger a smile.

At my next social gaggle with people most of whom I don't know, I think I'll use "I'm a writer." The place, person and my mood will spawn my reply to "What do you write?" My goal, however, remains the same: a smile; maybe a chuckle.

We are just on the same page some days.

How about another Atlanta-to-San Francisco connection?

Thank you for the great essay about Atlanta, San Francisco, Coca-Cola, and Ty Cobb. Aside from living in San Francisco and Atlanta, I worked for Coca-Cola and my grandfather grew up next door to Ty Cobb.

Unbelievable. More alignment than I thought.

Very good JD. I was struck, when reading your piece that, when faced with either losing your conscience vs. identity, the money was immaterial at that point. Sometimes writing helps us to "see" who we are really are and what we really believe. Paul Kingsnorth tells the story of sometimes not even knowing who he is in relation to a particular topic until he has to write about it. It's part of what makes him while, his identity. That's how I'm starting to feel, and that's what I got out of your article today, thank you.

Bravo! Excellent piece!!! I have never seen a grave stone that said "He worked for the man for 40 years". What was noted were the things you talked about at the end. Looking forward to checking out the book you linked. Thanks!
