In my youth we could pass freely over the US-Canada border. UBC students had to go to "The Breakers" or "The Reef" in Pt. Roberts, Washington, to get a beer on Sunday, as alcohol service was not permitted on Sundays until 1986, in time for Expo86. I never partook as I didn't have a car then and none of my classmates were so inclined.

After 2001 it was "Your papers please" and cement tunnels at the Peace Arch crossing.

The story takes place in 1992, when my parents were on their way to Honolulu. You could fly direct to Maui from Victoria, but not Honolulu, so they booked through Seattle. On arriving at US Customs, my father showed his Driver's Licence, but my mother was without ID. "You have your Driver's Licence don't you dear?"

"Yes, but I left it at home so I wouldn't lose it."

Customs agent rolls his eyes and sends them through.
