The War Party is pointing, laughing, and gloating… ridiculing skeptics of Iran attacks for being wrong, as if warning against war isn’t prudent.

Its proponents want to embed the notion that it’s more reckless to doubt armed intervention than to promote it, and that minding our own business is a greater danger than butting into everyone else’s.

But the burden of proof is always on those who urge war. That’s why the framers of the Constitution demanded such consequential action be debated in Congress, and be undertaken only after that body declares war.

Semantic Somersaults

Regardless its tactical merits, the attack on Iran lacked such sanction and was therefore illegal. The president has no Constitutional authority to start a war. That’s why some “conservative” influencers resort to semantic somersaults that would make Bill Clinton blush:

How is this different from “I. Did. Not. Have. Sex. With. That. Woman?” I suppose that depends on what your definition of “is” is.

Article II, Section 2 states the President "shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States.”

Only Congress can call the military into “actual service of the United States” - by declaring war… which Congress hasn’t done since WWII.

The armed forces are not the president’s personal plaything. He can’t commit them to airstrikes, invasion, attack, or battle without Congress calling them to service by declaring war. The Constitution wasn’t written in hieroglyphics or Morse Code. This isn’t complicated.

There are no exceptions for “emergencies” (a word not found in the Constitution) or extraordinary circumstances. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 didn’t override this requirement. That wasn’t a constitutional amendment, and doesn’t supersede the original document.

If anything, it was a feeble (and unconstitutional) attempt to restrain rogue presidents by requiring them to inform Congress before initiating hostilities. In essence, it’s an illegal law. Congress can’t delegate its power to the president.

Symptom of the Disease

But Trump didn’t even abide by that act. He didn’t notify Congress he was attacking Iran. As with his strikes on Yemen a few months ago, he just did it.

Like other modern presidents, this one is merely an acute symptom of a festering disease. Like all others this century (and most in the last one), Trump violated his oath by launching attacks without Congressional approval.

Like those predecessors, Trump should be impeached for this. If waging unauthorized war isn’t an impeachable offense, nothing is.

He won’t be, for the same reasons Biden, Obama, Clinton, and the Bushes weren’t. Congress generally approves of these discretionary wars, but wants to shun responsibility for starting them.

By offloading accountability onto the executive, members avoid smudging their name with the stain of a vote. They’ll happily take vicarious credit if attacks happen to go well, yet dodge blame when they invariably go bust.

Will this one? Who knows? We’re not even sure what “this one” is.

While Trump kept Congress out of the loop, he and the Iranians reportedly kept each other informed, providing advance warning of their respective attacks. The Iranians removed their uranium before the Americans attacked. The US cleared its base in Qatar before Tehran did.

Is this true? I don’t know. Except for those making this mess, no one does. But it’s a weird war in which antagonists provide advance notice of impending attack.

In the sad saga of our government’s endless wars, perhaps this theater is just for show? I hope so. But what happens when someone forgets his lines or refuses to play his part?

It’s Own Foil

After two decades of military disasters wasting trillions of dollars and millions of lives, some of us worried that attacking Iran could be catastrophic. Perhaps President Trump proved us wrong.

But I doubt it.

The quality of a decision isn’t a function of its outcome. Reckless choices can occasionally work out. Wise ones will sometimes flop.

Yet each potentially sets a precedent, by instilling welcome humility or reinforcing unwarranted hubris. Like a kid who wins big on his first trip to the casino or multiplies his money on his maiden stock pick, “victory” can be its own foil.

With any luck, Israeli lackeys and their war stooges were right that this crisis has subsided after some token bombings. But even if that’s correct (and we hope it is), the US government took extraordinary risks for little reason.

Iran had no nuclear weapons and wasn’t a threat to the United States. With no declaration from Congress, the president jeopardized the security of soldiers and citizens to thwart a regime that posed no threat to the American people. And (for what it’s worth) he wasted more resources and weapons to do it.

Who knows what happens from here? After one week of the Iraq war, its cheerleaders were sipping Champagne and slapping backs. A few years later they were making excuses and issuing apologies.

That’s not unusual. Wars often open with appealing plots to suck us in. Then come surprise twists and unforeseen endings. Like a clear dawn on the slopes of Vesuvius, initial impressions can be deceptive.

Before Salamis, the Persians seemed set to throttle the Greeks. Who thought the Romans would overcome the Carthaginians after Cannae?

What were the prospects for independence when Washington was cornered on Long Island, or when the British captured Philadelphia and plundered the South? After the Battles of Manassas (both of them), Southerners confidently cheered the defeat of the Yankees. Until Vicksburg and Gettysburg, it seemed likely Lincoln would lose his abominable war.

When considering any interventions, the Second World War is the historical example our modern jingoists insist we reference, as if the best analogs for assessing the country between Afghanistan and Iraq are… Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.

Fine.

How did “the Good War” look a few months in? Was the summer of 1940 a reliable harbinger of what was to come? What about two years later? How many Germans were high-fiving in the Reichstag when Hitler’s army reached the Don?

Altho’ we’re supposed to forget the Iraq War (or assume it’s irrelevant to what might happen next door), confidence overflowed within days of that invasion. It wouldn’t last.

A Healthy Impulse

By its nature, war is uncivilized… and unpredictable - even after it ends. The First World War was causing carnage long after the Treaty of Versailles. It still is.

Even if deemed necessary, military force should be used reluctantly, soberly, and constitutionally. Scoffing at those who hesitate to deploy it is unseemly, if not insidious.

Urging action that can result in human displacement, loss of life, and destruction of property should be done without relish, and with respect for those who warn of the risks. Only savages demean anyone wary of war, especially after our catastrophic catalogue of disastrous interventions.

For decades, we’ve witnessed not only how our government sacrificed soldiers and imperiled civilians to seize control of the Middle East. Domestically, we’ve also watched it waste our wealth, monitor our movements, close our businesses, restrict our travel, grope our groins, and coerce unproven elixirs into our arms… all in name of keeping us “safe”.

As the dollar deteriorates, the economy crumbles, unknown migrants proliferate, and cities degrade into drug-addled cesspools, some of us think bombing distant backwaters mightn’t be the best use of our dwindling seed corn.

Being anti-war… like opposing “climate” scams or resisting covid outrages… is a healthy impulse. In each case, the enemy is the same entity: our own government. It hasn’t earned our trust. Withholding it should be our default position.

But the most ardent advocates for this war tend to be the same “conservatives” who (rightly) question the domestic overreaches of our overlords in Washington.

Many justifiably opposed the covid lockdowns this same government (this same president!) green-lighted five years ago. Yet they now question the “loyalty” of those (including Thomas Massie, the most principled member of Congress) who dare doubt the leader’s wisdom.

Reasonable Response

Predictions, as the quip has it, are perilous… especially regarding the future, and particularly if you assume the future is already here.

Like George Bush unfurling a “Mission Accomplished” banner on an aircraft carrier, those who advocated these attacks may feel vindicated… for now. But time has a way of making us humble.

When asked the impact of the French Revolution almost two centuries after it occurred, Zhou Enlai famously (and perhaps apocryphally) responded, “it’s too soon to say.”

Three whole days after US bombs hit Iran, as war-hawks slam dunks and spike the ball, that remains a reasonable response while we wonder what’s next.

The American republic died long ago. But till recently, elected officials at least had the decency to honor its memory.

When starting stupid wars in distant places, our “leaders” at least pretended to be bound by constitutional scruples. Even if it didn’t do something as quaint as declare war, Congress would pass resolutions delegating its power to the president.

This was obviously illegal. But it was at least a wink toward constitutional constraints.

Our leaders now think so little of the rubes they rule that they no longer pretend the Constitution matters. Despite launching or supporting a daisy chain of wars since the start of this century, declaring one never comes up. It’s just assumed to be the president’s prerogative.

Speaking of which, regarding potential military action in Iran, President Trump had this to say:

"I may do it, I may not do it, nobody knows what I'm going to do.”

“I”?

Ron Paul replied correctly to Trump’s unhinged grandiosity, noting that “America's Founders drafted a Constitution to protect us from this.”

But the Constitution is worthless if no one enforces it. As Lysander Spooner put it, “the Constitution either permits what’s happening, or is unable to prevent it. Either way, it’s unfit to exist.”

That Trump’s comments not only go unchallenged by Congress, but are cheered by most members, reveals how far that institution has sunk. The judiciary, which fell over itself to intervene when the executive branch fired its own employees, sits silent as the president usurps Congressional power.

Honest Brokers

The ostensible reasons for war with Iran have been repeatedly refuted. Unlike Israel, Iran has no nuclear weapons, has invaded no neighbors, lacks capacity or desire to attack the U.S., and has consistently complied with non-proliferation treaties.

War proponents note that for forty-five years Iranians have chanted “Death to America” and called the U.S. the “Great Satan”.

This is true. But so what? They’ve hated us for almost half a century and haven’t done anything about it. Unless irresistibly provoked, why would they start now?

And what caused such heated enmity? Is it possible the US regime did something to irk the Iranians?

Or do they simply “hate us for our freedom”… as if one day in 1979 a bunch of mullahs stumbled upon the Declaration of Independence or found a photo of a chick in a bikini, suddenly went berserk, and ordered crazed students to storm the embassy?

Or might their antipathy have something to do with incessant US meddling where it doesn’t belong? Had America stayed in its hemisphere and minded its own business, Iran likely wouldn’t have its reactionary regime.

Perhaps the Persians didn’t appreciate the CIA ditching their democratically elected government in 1953, and installing a dictatorial puppet for the next quarter-century?

Maybe Iranians resent the U.S. sponsoring a regional attack dog that wags its owner whenever it wants. Before Israel was established, the U.S. had almost nothing to do with the Middle East… and no enemies in the area.

No one burned U.S. flags or chanted “Death to America”. Within the region, Americans were mostly appreciated, and considered honest brokers among competing powers.

But a few years later, the CIA overthrew the elected ruler of Iran and replaced him with the Shah. Increasing intervention has defined U.S. policy ever since… with an overt tilt toward Israeli desire.

For apparently unrelated reasons, during the ensuing decades planes started being hijacked, hostages taken, barracks bombed, and buildings targeted by passenger jets.

Deafening Screams

The best thing the U.S. can do (and the last thing it will do) is butt out. It should shutter every base in the area and withdraw all troops from the region. The flow of US munitions and money to every country should immediately cease.

With the deafening screams of recent experience, this should go without saying. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the U.S. government wasted the “peace dividend”. Rather than revert to being a constitutional republic, it reasserted itself as a global bully.

For four decades, it’s flushed trillions of dollars and millions of lives into destructive interventions in god-forsaken sh*tholes… which is what many parts of this country have begun to resemble.

America is dying internally, suffering internal division, cultural decay, rising crime, crumbling infrastructure, festering homelessness, chronic disease, a deteriorating dollar, unassimilable migrants, and almost $40T of federal (never mind state, local, and private) debt. The last thing we need are more idiotic wars.

It’s not as if ancient history is required to learn the lessons of these disastrous quagmires. This century is a catalogue of catastrophic conflicts.

If we’ve learned anything from them (apparently we haven’t), it’s that their consequences are mostly unforeseen, and usually worse than even the pessimists predict.

What recent war has been “successful”? None this century have had anything to do with “national defense”… except to the extent they undermined it by creating millions of new enemies we don’t need.

Farcical Pretense

Preventing Iran from developing nukes is a farcical pretense for launching attacks. That regime is no closer to nuclear weapons than it has been for twenty years. Why the sudden “threat” that warrants war?

To the extent Iran has done anything to advance its nuclear capabilities, it was in response to Trump ripping up the original deal in his first term. Iran acknowledges its enrichment capabilities for civilian medical and power purposes, but that’s not synonymous with building a bomb.

The IAEA and Trump’s own administration affirm this assessment. Just three months ago, Trump’s own Director of National Intelligence refuted the notion in testimony to Congress.

When reminded this week of Tulsi Gabbard’s words, the president disrespected his director by saying “I don’t care what she said.”

That being the case, Tulsi Gabbard should resign. Why work for someone who publicly denigrates you while dismissing what you say?

While there’s no evidence Iran has nuclear weapons, these attacks provide further incentive for them (and every other regime) to have some… just as the U.S. and Israel do.

Yet, as if to preemptively scuttle any potential deal, Trump insists enrichment be prohibited. This is nonsensical, like allowing McDonalds to make burgers so long as they don’t use beef. The demand was made knowing it would be rejected, and provide pretext for a long-awaited war.

At the behest of Israel, the president is fomenting one on the plateau of Persia. A few days ago Trump told ten million Iranians to leave Tehran, as if the city is about to receive the Gaza treatment.

Who the hell does he think he is? How would Americans react if the Ayatollah ordered residents of Washington to flee the district?

Sinister and Stupid

This entire fiasco makes Trump look terrible. As it should.

He either pretended to negotiate while knowing an attack was imminent, or was blindsided by Israel bombing Iran while letting him think he was cutting a deal. The president was either duplicitous or impotent.

Neither is good. But which is worse?

If Trump was unaware of the attack, his fear of looking like a fool (too late) isn’t letting him call Israel out. Rather than thwart a moronic war by admitting he’d been duped, he prefers to pretend his double-cross was part of the plan.

Regardless, Trump is sending disconcerting signals that he’ll mire America in another worthless war, and is willing to wreck his presidency and country to appease Israel. And he’ll do this on his own, with no declaration from Congress… much of which is cheering him on.

Everything about this is sinister and stupid. The endeavor is even dumber than recent regime-change wars, not only because Iran is a more difficult target… but because Trump has the fresh lessons of those disasters that he refuses to heed.

What of genuine threats this phony one could precipitate? How many nefarious sleeper cells have entered the U.S. during the decades the border has been open? Could any be activated in response to another American attack in the Middle East? Would one be used as a “false flag” to retroactively “justify” invasion of Iran?

Al Qaeda was ostensibly the culprit on 9/11. They are enemies of Iran, so toppling the ayatollah would be a blessing to them. It could open vast terrain to recruit and rebuild, much as they did in the boiling cauldron of post-war Iraq.

All of these are unknowns, among scores of unpredictable consequences war advocates breezily brush aside. After two decades of carnage, even those who admit earlier errors shrug their shoulders and urge doing it again.

No Brain

And they apparently have a president who’s all ears… and no brain. He’s not alone. There are many empty heads on the Hill.

In response to Trump telling Iranians to “evacuate Tehran”, the loathsome Representative Randy Fine summed up his bellicose sentiment by flippantly posting “bombs away”, not caring how many innocent lives he’s cheering away.

He also posted this. Again, this is an American politician:

Even among intelligent people, the ignorance is astounding. Despite being a proponent for this war, Senator Ted Cruz admitted he didn’t know the population of Iran. How big a threat can a government be if you don’t know rudimentary facts about the country it rules?

It doesn’t matter. Except to the extent this war makes it one, Iran is no threat to the United States.

But it’s an inconvenience to Israel, in the pocket of which Senator Cruz comfortably nestles. He needn’t make a coherent argument to attack Iran. His only job is to do what he’s told.

Whether as payoff for campaign contributions or because of blackmail regarding illicit financing or nefarious files, Donald Trump is willing to dangle from Israeli strings.

Whatever the reasons, he’s acting like a lunatic… and clearly not in America’s interest.

He posted a demand for “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER” from a country with which the U.S. is supposedly not at war. This is deranged and asinine, the language Truman used (and that General Eisenhower wisely opposed) to rationalize dropping atomic bombs on Japan.

During his first term, Donald Trump was twice impeached for nonsensical reasons. But as with every president this century (including Trump), waging an undeclared war warrants removal from office.

This process should already be underway. But it won’t happen, because the president’s accusers would be complicit. With all the criticism Trump receives, he’s never blamed for lobbing bombs.

As in Syria or Yemen, he’s cheered for it. And not just (or even mostly) by Jews, plenty of whom oppose what the Israeli government does in their name. Many of the most maniacal Zionists… including the current U.S. ambassador to Israel… are nominal “Christians”, and Evangelical lunatics:

Relying on a demented dispensationalism, they weaponize “Christianity” in the West to eradicate Christianity in the Holy Land. This probably isn’t their intent. But had it been, it’s hard to conceive what they’d have done differently.

I have no fear any Iranian will kill me. I’m not worried about a rogue Russian picking my pocket. But I know with absolute certainty my own government will steal my money and endanger my life. Thru inflation, taxes, debt, and war it does so every day and all the time.

War proponents often remind us we live in “a dangerous world”. That’s correct, particularly given what they’ve done to it.

But the greatest peril is closer to home.

I started to write this Thursday night, on the heels of a speech I couldn’t believe I’d just heard. But because that address was so ominous and outrageous, I decided to put down my pen, and take time to reflect.

Having done so, I’ve decided that the conclusion to be drawn is even more disturbing than the one I’d originally reached.

In a scene reminiscent of an inter-war dictator or V for Vendetta, and set in Orwellian fashion before Independence Hall, the President of the United States declared war on Americans.

The diatribe was reminiscent of the insidious “With Us or Against Us” theme George W Bush used to gin up false pretenses for war and torture twenty years ago. The only difference is that the type people who justifiably condemned that speech now insipidly extol this one.

And instead of Middle Easterners, it’s middle Americans who are today’s targets. The “War on Terror” has been turned inwards.

Nebulous Foes

This has been happening for quite some time. It was the whole point of the Patriot Act, the Department of Homeland Security, the TSA, FACTA, the Covid response, the coming climate clampdowns, and the pending imposition of central bank digital currencies.

The “War on Terror” and the “War on Covid”…like the “War on Drugs”…were never about eradicating those nebulous foes they pretended to attack. They were to accumulate power and control us.

Yet there are many stubborn Americans who still value their freedom, and remain disinclined to be pushed around. For the most part, these are people who prefer to do their jobs, raise their kids, go to church, and mind their own business.

But they deeply regret pushy politicians and maniacal meddlers who insist on minding it for them. If whack-job coastal elites want to defy nature, promote perversion, ignore science, annihilate their economies and destroy their states, that’s their prerogative. Just leave others out of it.

But these incorrigible world-improvers are incapable of doing so. It’s not enough for California, Massachusetts, New York, and Illinois to commit suicide with insane policies. These elite bastions of cultural enlightenment won’t rest easy till every other state does so too.

In the Cross-Hairs

For decades, the self-righteous Left has pressed the patience of traditional America. Now, in certain pockets, traditional America is pushing back…and the Left doesn’t like it. It demonizes the resistors, calls them names, and threatens their livelihood when they dare to dissent.

As the president’s half-wit press secretary put it the other day, this administration considers anyone “extreme” who isn’t in the majority. That’s rich coming from a black lesbian speaking for an executive with a forty percent approval rating. 

But none of that matters. The only objective is complete submission. As we were trained during Covid, “The Greater Good” demands our rights be reduced.

Throughout the brief tenure of his interminable term, the man who swore an oath to uphold the Constitution has openly advocated gutting the First, Second, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, and Tenth Amendments. Presidents routinely shred the Bill of Rights. But few have the gumption to be so blatant and brazen when doing it.

Aside from the Second, he doesn’t denounce any amendment by name. But they’re all in the cross-hairs. His previous press secretary admitted that the administration leans on social media companies to censor science and suppress dissent.

The president himself routinely denounces gun ownership, and derides individuals and states for guarding their rights. None of this is a secret, or a surprise.

A year ago, he unilaterally commanded a hundred million Americans to inject a drug. The Courts eventually revoked that sinister policy. But jobs were lost, lives ruined, and medicine injected under obvious duress.

And despite the unconstitutionality of that wicked order, no one who implemented it suffered. It’s as if a thief was told he could no longer steal, but he was still allowed to keep what he stole.

The president treats “Charlottesville” and “January 6“ as if the Maine were sunk at Pearl Harbor on September 11 rather than the relative footnotes they actually were. And, of course, he more recently sicced his secret police on his predecessor’s property.

Rhetorical War

But it’s not merely (or even particularly) party leaders and opposing politicians who are most under assault. It’s anyone who disagrees with the official party line. These are third-world, banana republic tactics to dispense with the rule of law, and annihilate enemies to consolidate power.

As part of the rhetorical war, “fascism” and “traitor” have become the new “racism”. They’re increasingly meaningless terms that say more about the intelligence (and likely instincts) of those who utter them than they do about the motives of those they’re meant to slander.

Yet if enough idiots can be made to believe that up to half of Americans are truly “fascist”, the Covid response proved that most of them will agree to whatever steps the government takes to defeat the menace. After all, should “fascists” be allowed to own guns, say what they want, or win an election?

The Administration announced that it is hiring more new IRS agents than there are people in the British army, and reasonable people were called crazy for being concerned.

These employees aren’t being onboarded to audit the returns of billionaire bankers or pharmaceutical executives. They’re primary objective is to come after us.

Coke and Pepsi

In his divisive speech the other night, the president carefully aligned “moderate” Republicans with his own party. This not only distinguishes the “respectable“ establishment who “work with” him from the “MAGA” Republicans he demands we resist. It’s also a subtle way of formally consolidating into single rule the one-party state that (like Coke and Pepsi) has informally existed under two different brands.

We don’t know what’s really going on, but none of it is good. Is the stage being set for false flags, targeted arrests, or martial law? I don’t know.

But if it were, this is how it would look. With midterms approaching, the incumbent party expected to get whacked, and the Covid precedent we’ve just endured, anything’s possible.

I’ve never thought any recent president is really in charge. Since Eisenhower gave his prescient farewell address (and probably before), we’ve known a shadow government has run the show.

Joe Biden may have been on that eerie platform uttering those unsettling words. But other people are writing the script and pulling the strings. We may not know exactly who they are. But they let the president know he will reap his rewards if he does what they say…among which is to let us know we will pay the price if we don’t.
